What is BTU?
BTU (British Thermal Unit) measures how much heat an AC can remove from a room per hour. The higher the BTU, the larger the area it can cool.
- 1 Ton AC = 12,000 BTU/hr — cools rooms up to 150 sq ft
- 1.5 Ton AC = 18,000 BTU/hr — cools rooms up to 200 sq ft
- 2 Ton AC = 24,000 BTU/hr — cools rooms up to 300 sq ft
Rule of thumb for Indian homes: Multiply your room area (sq ft) by 20 to get the approximate BTU needed. Add 10-20% extra for top-floor rooms, west-facing walls, or kitchens with heat sources.
